Phillip Charette

Phillip is an Oregon resident of Alaskan Native and French Canadian descent. One of today’s leading contemporary Native artists, Phillip honors his culture through his contemporary expression of traditional Yup’ik masks and culture. His medium consists of wood, clay (raku and horsehair fired), porcelain glass, bronze, copper, and various other materials, as well as monotype printmaking.

Phillip's work has been shown at the Smithsonian, Eiteljorg, Bishop, Hallie Ford, Washington State History, and Heard Museums. In 2006, Phillip was honored with the Artists Choice award for one of his sculptures at the Santa Fe Indian Art Market, and in 2008 he received the Best of Division and First Place awards for one of his “Medicine” series mono type prints. He also designs and sells Native flutes and drums. Phillip has been featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Oregon Art Beat” for both his art and music.

Phillip was recently awarded a 2009 SWAIA Fellowship. This coveted Native American Fellowship through the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts went to only 5 applicants this year. Phillip's award will help him diversify into outdoor metal sculpture reminiscent of his existing work.

Harvard Magazine's May / June 2009 issue contains an article on Phillip and his work. The article can be seen in the print edition or online at http://harvardmagazine.com/2009/05/mnemonic-masks.

Little F

This was a challenge piece made for the teenage skate boarders that hang around the house. It started when one of them brought him a broken skateboard and said "I'll bet you can't make a mask out of this." That was followed by donations of a second broken board, and then wheels and bearings... When the thought of naming the piece came up, my significant other said "Little F*cker" because that is, unfortunately, what skate boarders are too often called. You know, things like "hey you little f*cker, get out of here!" This piece brings respect out of disrespect.

A "No Skateboarding" sign recently appeared, (no questions asked) and that will be added, along with the bearings and wheels, sort of as a necklace...

This piece bears Fallen image (Fallen Footwear is a line produced by well-known skater Jamie Thomas) on the forehead. Phillip, who is an old school skate boarder himself, and the boys have bought Fallen shoes, and when he was finishing the piece, that image came to mind. Black Box Distribution has given us permission to display and sell the piece with that image intact.

For information on how to obtain this piece through our rental and leasing program, please contact the artist directly.

Crane Yua

Since winning the Artists Choice award at the Santa Fe Indian Art Market in 2006, I've been asked a number of times to recreate that piece. Each of my pieces is original, so while I never have and never will fully, I have made smaller pieces based on that 6 foot award winning crane. This crane yua mask is one of my personal favorites and is a beautiful representation of the crane yua.
