I felt very alive and content on my first day of painting out of doors since last fall. In Delaware, our weather has been quite changeable as is typical of Spring in the Mid-Atlantic, though warmer than usual. This sunny afternoon was all that could be hoped for in mid April. Warm enough to invite my friend to have an ice cream at the University dairy after painting together. The colors in this painting are vibrant reflecting my mood. The whole experience put me in mind of e e cummings' poem
in Just-
by: e.e. cummings (1894-1962)
IN Just- spring when the world is mud- luscious the little lame baloonman whistles far and wee and eddieandbill come running from marbles and piracies and it's spring when the world is puddle-wonderful the queer old baloonman whistles far and wee and bettyandisbel come dancing from hop-scotch and jump-rope and it's spring and the goat-footed baloonMan whistles far and wee
This poem has always seemed to me one of the most joyous celebrations of Spring.
