SUSANA LAMADRID About

Susana Lamadrid__™s work revolves mostly around human figure, although she also shows a tendency to break away from figure and cultivate abstract landscape. When she does paint the human body, she takes an expressionistic approach, and focuses on the torso. Very seldom does she give a face to her bodies. This abstraction leads the artist to represent tension, emotion, without the resource of facial expression, based only on brushstroke and color to achieve her objective. In a sense, figure is the pretext for Susana to explore metaphors. Human figure turns into a metaphor of love or landscape. And not only does she use human figure, but other figures as well in her exploration of the forces that move the universe. In her recent works we find galloping white horses that could very well be a reference to apocalypse, a symbol of changing times. But in her painting they appear as a more immediate depiction of the forces of nature, represented by a crashing wave from which they appear to emerge, powered by the same force that gives origin to the wave itself. Motion then becomes a living element in the painting. Horses and ocean become one and they move at the same pace, and become one with the movement, therefore they turn increasingly abstract. Susana Lamadrid__™s abstract landscapes are places that invite the viewer to contemplation. She relies heavily on her skilled brushwork to bring light onto the canvas, to lead the viewer__™s eye on a journey across the geography of the painting. To glide along the vast open spaces and to stop to decipher accidents, which interrupt the otherwise placid traverse. Susana Lamadrid__™s intriguing paintings are sometimes bordered by silver leaf. 3 comments

___Started in chalk and pastels, then to oils, and on to acrylics.

It__™s been about twenty years now that I__™ve been working in acrylics.

Sometimes I use mixed media, or a heavier texture,

mixed with wax because it reflects the light differently___.

For me it__™s imperative to go ahead without fear.

Many times I change something, erase it, or discard it.

Without fear of change, I can do whatever I want___.
