Shawn Farley About
As an artist, I have long been a disciple of the surrealist movement of the 30’ and 40’s. To me, the work of that period effectively delved into the hidden and sometimes dark places of the subconscious that exists in everyone. The works of Ernst, Varo, Magritte, Tanning, Carrington, etc. always captivated me.
My assemblages often express personal views on social, political and religious issues and may sometimes depict dreams I have had. Others, as was often the surrealist’s modus operandi, are purely automatic – they just come together. I recycle the discarded items of our existence. To me they become treasures – objects with a soul. Nothing is “useless”. Removed from their familiar surroundings these objects take on new identities, achieve unintended destinies.
Media: wood, oil paint, found objects.
