Tropical Waters
I start with a pre-primed canvas board and initially use black acrylic paint just to get a bold framework to work on, over or to leave alone. I used one color for each of the primary colors and two greens, a yellow ochre and I mixed pink, purple and orange plus a few touches of titanium white. I was initially going to call the piece "Yellow Dolphins Hunting", but there was too much color and activity and I thought the dolphins could just as easily be seen a bananas amidst a complex arrangement of tropical fruit. There are a few things I've learned over the years about painting abstract expressionist paintings--Be bold, be vibrant, vary your mark from thick to medium to thin, use different tools, make the corners of the painting as interesting as the center, don't get precious-learn to paint over blocks of areas that are too busy, too complex-detailed, take advantage of complementary colors, always use some neutral color to offset the brilliant colors and make the image hold together, let go of the critic and trust your intuition.
