Kate Kiernan About

My name is Kate Kiernan and I was born in Brooklyn in the early 1960s. Over the years I've gone in through different creative stages experimenting with painting, photography, dance, music, songwriting and creative writing. I returned to school to get my B.F.A. degree in painting and photography in my mid 30s only to have to take time off due to the sudden onset of schizophrenia. I was unable to paint or photograph, so instead I learned to make jewelry and crocheted afghans, shirts, hats, bags and gloves. I realized quickly that it was incredibly important to stay creative in any fashion. After a three year absence from school I returned and earned my degree. Creativity is not a cure, but it is an effective treatment. Now my creativity is more than a treatment; it's become an integral part of who I am.
