Neal Parks About
Parks's paintings are evocative illusions of spatial depth in a woven mesh of colors and energetic lines. The highly charged surfaces of the paintings are explorations of brilliant light and color interwoven in calligraphic-like lines, creating an atmospheric light quality.
At any given time Parks can be found creating several specific types of paintings. Some are designed and executed for specific architectural situations, while others balance the need to push the limits of his own vision with personal spiritual expressions. In both instances Parks uses a time-intensive, meditative process of working with oil paint sticks. The textural quality of his work renders an ethereal sense of light that permeates the space throughout. Viewing his work has been described by others as a simultaneously calming yet energizing sensation.
Parks grew up in the small, rural New England town of Woodstock, Connecticut. He received a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 1984 and his M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1993. A notable personal experience was being a Peace Corps volunteer in 1990 with his wife in The Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a West African country in the Sahara desert.
Parks lives with his wife and son in Western Massachusetts.
