Where to Start and What to Paint!

I know that you as an artist have sat in front of a blank sheet of paper or canvas and wondered what to paint--have'nt you?? Well, I can truefully say that I have been there and done that. So where do you begin? I often start with the pictures I've taken over the years-or look up other artists and see what they do--or get a book and read it through--or set up a still life and etc. Sometimes, I just take the paint and let it do its own thing and then try to work something out--which isnt easy. I always think each painting will be my best--my masterpiece--but it does not turn out that way most of the time. Ive taken workshops, experimented with all media, went to demonstations of other artists at my art club, and each time I learn something new. I have stacks of watercolor paper that I have started and never finished--[lost the inspriation] and so it went in the drawer. I am really bad at finishing a painting--it is one of my "pet pieves" so to speak. I have painted in pastel, oil, watercolor, acrylics, mixed media, collage and etc. Ive tried them all--but I am never satisfied with my work. This painting I did with a still life and did it in black and white--I know that it is good to try --but boring to me. I wonder if you feel the same way as I do??? I keep on striving for that masterpiece anyway--I wonder if it will happen in my lifetime--Its not that I havent tried hard to accomplish it. I have set goals too--- Guess thats the best I can do. Let me hear from you artists----

We are all our own worst critics. You certainly have a very diverse portfolio and should feel good about yourself - you have certainly been creative and prolific. And we all have pictures that we were "gung ho" about but lost interest in half way through.

Your black/white pears have a fresh feeling - that's a great value study - just do it again using any color you want and it will be a great painting.

No, they don't all turn out - just celebrate the ones that do! And have FUN!
