Making Videos

My first video I made was in an Artid contest. I won the comedy prize. My daughter helped me and then I was on my own. I have been making them ever since. I am now 97 years old and still making them. I can not count how many I have now, but my last count was 400 or more. I love to make them but it is not easy. Let me tell you how I do it, and maybe you will try some too. First, I decide what I am going to paint. Step 2 I write down the title, decide the medium to use. Set up my camera [video camera] Arrange all my materials.Step 3- I fix the camera to see the paper, then I start to paint and explain what I am doing. Now that is the easy part. When I am finished the painting I transfer it to my MOVIE MAKER and put the clips on the internet. STEP 4 EDITING it is all the work… Continue reading… 1 comment

LET THE BIBLE INSPIRE YOUR ART In my new collection of MODERN CONTEMPORARY ABSTRACTS I have used the Bible as an inspiration. I find a verse that gives me an emotion for a painting, then I paint that emotion. This is one of my paintings that I used and On the back of the painting I name it and the verses I used. This one is called "GOD'S PRESENCE " PSALMS 24:1-4 Sometimes it may be more abstract and not so abstact, my emotions just come out. They are all 8"/10"canvas board. They are not high price. I hope you will try this and see what it can do. I have a video called "PAINTING A REAL EVENT " I hope you will watch it and see what I have been through since a year ago in August. It is a true event that happened to me when I had brain surgery last August… Continue reading… 0 comments

YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO PAINT. I am 97 years old and still painting. I have been painting 92 years I was 5 years old when I first started with crayons and a pad of paper. Next I tried pastels, oil, acrylic and last of all Watercolor. I have done a lot of paintings over the years. I find that a desire is the beginning, then comes passion to paint, but most of all, it is the LOVE to create something that you alone have done. A little bit of how GOD felt when He created the world. Instead of sitting around all day bored with life, due to the fact that you are unable to do the things you used to do, pick up a brush and PAINT. DUE to the last 3 years I have had to put it on hold, but I am painting again. The painting on this blog is a sample of 8"/10" on canvas board. I have done 50 this year… Continue reading… 2 comments

Painting A True Event.

This really happened to me. Three months ago I fell and hit my head. I went to the emergency and had a catscan. It was ok then. Later I developed a bad pain in my head. So back to the hospital I went. The catscan showed I had a large bloodclot. I had to have brain surgery. I found myself in a deep dark pit. I said "where am I". I looked up and saw a big door, and in the shadows I saw a figure of a great man, beautiful, strong. I asked "are you God?", He said "yes" and then it was dark again. I felt a touch of a hand on mine, and I said "are you Jesus", He said "yes"… Continue reading… 4 comments

I am always happy when I hear that my art was accepted in a State Wide cmpetition at Ella Sharp Museum here in Jackson Michigan. Even though l am 96 years young My passion is still to keep painting, the strength is not as good, due to so much illness these last.2 years. I figure " can't get an artist down" Sometimes you just push yourself. I have taught art lessons for 25 years, made over 350 teaching video, I sell on EBA y, ArtID. My love to paint gives me all I need to get me out of the rocking chair. This oil mountain scene is the painting I entered and was accepted in the show. I hope you keep painting , at any age. I just posted "WONDER of WATERCOLOR " I got a comment about it-How can I do this? I have several videos on youtube, that explains my way. They are called "LOOSE AND EASY. Look them up by google in my name, Millie Gift Smith. I want you to know that is not the only way I use watercolor. Many of my work is from a subject, however I never draw it all out, and plan all the details. I also use DR MARTINS BLEED PROOF WHITE. It is a watercolor based paint. It can usully fix places where you want to change. I am not a "pureist"' so to spesk, just have fun painting. When I say " I have nothing in mind" that is one way I love to paint, however usually I may think--flowers, sunset, clouds and others.I like to just start with this idea. I will say it does take a lot of practice… Continue reading… 1 comment

WATERCOLOR is my favorite media. It is a freedom of all medias. Why do I say this? I find my joy in it, because it is so unique.I like to sit in front of a big white sheet of good watercolor paper and just start putting the paint on, with nothing in mind. Then I watch to see the miracle of it all. It is how the paint just does wonders. I spray it with water and then it does its own thing. I know that many artists do not like it. Perhaps they use the paint to make it in a way that you draw it all in and then paint around everything. That is fine with me, but it is not the fun of just letting the paint do its thing. I look to find a painting and then I work it out. I have painted for many years in all medias, oil, acrylics, pastel and others… Continue reading… 10 comments

Reason For the Season

Do you know the Reason we celebrate Christmas? Its the Season of the best news we can ever know. It is CHRIST 'S Birthday. HE was born to die for the sins of all mankind. As I painted this Abstract of the Cross, my thoughts were how great a GIFT we get at Christmas---Eternal Life. For GOD gave HIS Begotten SON that Whosoever believeth in HIM shall have Eternal Life. What better Gift can we receive this year? I wish you all Merry Christmas and consider CHRIST, our SAVIOR as your best Christmas Gift… Continue reading… 1 comment

Painting A Series

Let me tell you about a series that I have painted over 25 paintings since 1975. I will start with the day I was just playing around with a sheet of watercolor paper. I finished this painting and did not know what to name it. My mother-in-law was staying with us at that time. She was always a busy woman and attended many meetings. I asked her if she would give it a name, she thought a moment and then she said "AFTER THE MEETING ". So that was the beginning. In these last years, I have done 25 or more. I have only 2 left, as I sold them all. This is a new one that I just finished. I made a video also of one. It has been a fun adventure and profitable too. I do recommend painting series 1 comment

I named this abstract "A NEW SONG ". I painted it as a video. It is on youtube now. Since my husband died in May, I have changed my life style. I moved home and have a new studio. When trials come , I have the LORD to lean on and help me through it all. It gives me a new song in my heart. My painting has been another help to me. It is a great healer. I thank all my fans for their prayers. Artid is a great web site. Just lucky to have a part in it… Continue reading… 2 comments

I love snow and paint many snow scenes. HOWEVER ! This winter has been a very long, cold and plenty of snow. I long for the spring to come. Each day it snows. Now if I was a skier, child, skater, etc-- it would be different, but I am a 93 year old artist. In April I will be 94. I am sorta housebound now with this weather. O.K. so I am complaining. Now I will stop doing just that and tell you how very great it is to be an artist in any kind of weather, age or housebound. I have so much fun doing my videos and painting each day. I must say that I am so blessed. I never dreamed I would still be doing all this at my age. The LORD has given me the richest gift that anyone can receive. I will stop complaining and start praising the LORD. This painting was a video… Continue reading… 6 comments

This is the painting I did of my video. [Painting mood with mixed media.] I must say that it is really a sad work of art. I am writing this blog to let you know a bit about the painting. As an artist, I felt the need to express my deepest feeling. which I do recommend. The reason I did this video,is to help others going through difficult situations where there is nothing you can do to correct it. My husband is very ill and cannot recover. Each day is a stress. So, as an artist, I am using my painting to help me. I made this video with just putting my feelings on paper with my watercolor and acrylic, I used oil pastel also. I want to let others know how much it helped me. It is a hard thing to see a loved one go through this. He has lost his memory and is not eating … Continue reading… 5 comments

Spend a Day Working on Unfinished paintings

by MILLIEGIFTSMITH , January 21, 2013—03:49 PM

This really snowy day, I decided to do some different work. I looked at some of my unfinished paintings and Decided "Yes, this is the day to do just that" So I got out my watercolors and choose an almost finished work ,to do. I will start on another one soon. it is so refreshing to finish something that has been around for awhile. I know that most artists have many works that just" almost" are done, and then put aside till later. I know I do. So why not look up some old work an get it done. Here is one that I finished today. I already had 2 compliments on it. Maybe it will get someones eye and buy it. What do you think? Will you agree it is fun to know that it is worth it all, just to do it… Continue reading… 3 comments

Wishing you all the very best this year. May it be as colorful as this painting. I am so glad that Christ was born , and He lives in my heart today. Blessings to all… Continue reading… 2 comments

Lately I have been doing a lot of abstracts. They fascinate me. I guess after painting for so many years, it is refreshing to just let yourself go and paint. I don't really understand exactly what makes a good abstract, but that doesnt matter to me. I just like the freedom of painting them. I have always liked to try new things, and this is a challenge to me. I still do realism too, but not as much. I guess when I started making videos,I wanted to have them different techniques. I have over 120 videos now on youtube. Now I want to talk about this painting on my blog. I have been reading a lot about Israel and all the rockets and problems they are facing. I believe that they are God's choosen people. I know that everyone won't think my way, but still--I believe… Continue reading… 2 comments

Danger in Studio

This painting I started as a video. I named it "Rejoice" However, when I was working on it, My chair fell on top of me. It caught on the plastic and down I went. Well, the painting is not finished yet and half the video is gone. I guess it is going to be half a video. May put it on . I guess I was just too engrossed in the painting to watch what I was doing, as a result I have a very badly black and blue foot, and sore hip. Nothing was broken, which is good. I hope that this will remind you other artists, that it can be a dangerous place if we get too involved in what we are painting. I am doing o.k. but it isnt any fun to hurt. I guess I can rejoice that nothing was broken… Continue reading… 1 comment

Never too Old to Learn

by MILLIEGIFTSMITH , October 22, 2012—12:00 AM

Painting is a forever thing with me. At 92 years of age, I am still learning. I try to paint every day and learn more. Until I take my last breath, I shall paint. My belief is that ---- the Lord says He has gone to prepare a place for me. I know that it will be a beautiful studio there in Heaven, so I can paint the whole world. When God gives one the love I have to paint, I know He is faithful to see that I just keep painting forever and forever. Someday, He will call me home and my work here will be done, but it really wont be done in Heaven. I fashion I will paint the Heavens, the planets, and God as He really is. What a joy it is to know that this life is just a beginning, and someday go to one that last forever. Yesterday I painted 5 owls… Continue reading… 4 comments
