Designed by Edward Bennett, the stunning Beaux Arts-style Michigan Avenue Bridge was completed in 1920. The bas relief sculptures on the bridge, one of which is shown in this painting, that make it one of the best loved sights in Chicago. The sculptures depict important events in early Chicago history. The one I chose to paint depicts the aftermath of the Chicago Fire and the workmen who rebuilt it. I wanted to capture the light at sunset. For a very few, brief moments the sun shines directly on the side of the statuary, but also reflects off the Chicago River, lighting up the top area as well. The dramatic yellow and orange light is reminiscent of a fire and thus is very appropriate for this Chicago painting. The original acrylic painting has been SOLD. This work is now available as a beautiful limited edition, giclee impression on canvas, starting at $185.00. It will be shipped to you ready for a gallery wrap or to be framed. It will arrive, rolled in a heavy card board tube, with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by the artist. These editions can be done in a variety of sizes, so contact me via email at DurstArt@aol.com to get a quote on the size you would desire.
