The Use of Fibonacci Design in Painting
by MATTBATES , March 20, 2013—12:00 AM
In my latest cityscape painting "Lover's Bridge in Verona" I used a design technique which utilizes the Fibonacci sequence. The painting has dimensions which are 180cm x 80cm. By breaking up the width into two parts we get 50cm + 130cm with the height being 80cm, we get three consecutive Fibonacci numbers, 5, 8, 13. By doing this the overall design of the bridge fits naturally into the famous Fibonacci spiral. We also get two Fibonacci rectangles on the sides of the painting and a perfect square of 80cm x 80cm in the middle between the two Fibonacci rectangles…

Copley Square - Boylston Street
by MATTBATES , April 5, 2012—08:57 AM
Thanks to my collaboration with Galerie D'Orsay in Boston's Back Bay, I have created a new cityscape of Boston. The painting is oil on canvas and has the dimensions of 70cm x 90cm. I am very happy to revisit Boston, where my Mother's family is from. I feel that I have made a connection with my roots that was quite unexpected…

Santa Trinita Revisited
by MATTBATES , October 3, 2009—12:00 AM
I just got back from Cannes where I visited with Franck Neel the owner and curator of Galerie Neel where this, and other of my paintings are available. Franck has done a stellar job at the galerie, with this painting in particular, the frame is super. It was great to see this painting again.
(4th dimensional painting is when you can see more in the design than you can in real life. This painting was designed to bend space and time. After 5 years, I came back to this bridge to make an even larger painting, always loving the overall design of this place.)
This painting is available for purchase at Galerie Neel in Cannes. For inquiries call +33 (0) 4 93 68 57 83…

On a recent trip home to Washington, DC, I found this beautiful statue at the National Gallery. I added the background which makes for a stunning contrast between the immobile folds on the statue and the breezy folds of the velvet curtain…

Apoxyomenos - Greek Statue
by MATTBATES , January 15, 2008—08:30 AM
Greek Statue - Apoxyomenos
Oil on Canvas - 80cm x 100cm - __2007, Matthew Bates, All Rights Reserved
Last winter there was a great artistic event in Firenze, the exhibition of the recently restored "Apoxyomenos of Losinj" (Croatia). I was incredibly inspired by this masterpiece of antiquity. I took lots of photos of the statue, and the above painting was inspired directly from my visit to Palazzo Medici, where the statue was on display. The painting is larger than life, made this way so I could explore the intricate details of this Greek jewel which is over 2000 years old.
