For several years now I have been researching ways to enhance the 3d experience of looking at a 2d painting. A flat canvas is as 2d as it gets, so the artist's job is to add the illusion of dimension where in reality there is none. For "Il Putto" I have come up with a new idea. By focusing on the statue in the foreground, the background goes double. In photorealism, I think people have forgotten that they see with two eyes, while the camera has only one. That means we are not using all of the information at our disposal when we paint directly from photos. I just got back from Cannes where I visited with Franck Neel the owner and curator of Galerie Neel where this, and other of my paintings are available. Franck has done a stellar job at the galerie, with this painting in particular, the frame is super. It was great to see this painting again. After 5 years, I came back to this bridge to make an even larger painting, always loving the overall design of this place.) This painting is available for purchase at Galerie Neel in Cannes. On a recent trip home to Washington, DC, I found this beautiful statue at the National Gallery. I added the background which makes for a stunning contrast between the immobile folds on the statue and the breezy folds of the velvet curtain… Continue reading… 0 comments
