Rock Creek Winter

Topics: Rice, paper, strengthening the composition

This painting was created by gluing rice paper to 140 lb watercolor paper with acrylic medium, and then acrylic medium applied also over the rice paper, and then paint is applied over that. In this manner interesting patterns are achieved.

I created this scene from a photo which I had taken. However, as I studied the photo, I found it necessary to redesign it in order to strenthen the composition. It no longer has any resemblance to the area shown in the photo, so if you are driving through Rock Creek Park in Washington, D. C. looking for this place, you will not be able to find it. This is a snowy fall scene on a sunny day of trees reflecting their fall colors in the creek that is in the foreground, and of lengthening shadows of the trees in the snow.
