Marlene didn't start painting until late in life when she went back to college. Her teachers gave her lots of support and encouragement, so much so that she didn't want to leave and took 8 yrs to get her degree. Marlene lives and plays with paint and charcoal in Florida . 10 comments




Marlene Mayfield studied in New York at Queens College, with Reuben Hale and Jim Houser at Palm Beach Community College and with Carlton Plummer in Maine and Tom Lynch in Florida. She has completed workshops under the auspices of Cambridge University, England, The Ringling School of Art at Wildacres NC, Arrowmont School in Pigeon Forge NC, University of Northern Arizona at Sedona, and at the Robert and Mary Montgomery Armory Art Center, West Palm Beach, FL.

Her sensitive watercolors have won prizes in several shows, including the very first Royal Palm Festival Art Show in Palm Beach. In 1977 she won 3rd Place for ___Circus___ and in 1978, 2nd and 3rd Places went to her ___Nude___ and ___Patio___ respectively. In March 2008 Marlene__™s sensitive watercolor ___Prettied Poppies___ won 1st prize for watercolors at the Sebastian River Art Club Annual Juried Art Show.

In 1993, Ms. Mayfield was selected as the official artist of the Royal Poinciana Fiesta. Her pen and ink portraits of Rock Hudson, Rudolf Nureyev and Michael Butler were exhibited at Studio 412 West Palm Beach in connection with ___ A Day Without Art___. In 1995, Marlene__™s work was represented at the Art Against Aids program at The Norton Museum of Art. More recently her work was featured at Belle Arte Gallery in Wellington, Florida and the Andrews Valley Artist__™s Gallery in North Carolina, Abbot Tract Gallery in St. Augustine Florida and included in shows with the Wellington Art Society, coffee House Gallery in Lake Worth and also at Jupiter Town Hall Gallery of Art. Marlene has been a member of The Florida Watercolor Society, The Artist__™s Guild of The Palm Beaches, Lake Worth Art Club and The Palm Beach County Cultural Council. She is currently a member of Sebastian River Art Club and the Cultural Council of Indian River County.

Ms. Mayfield feels the artist__™s role is to communicate and finds watercolor a perfect medium for capturing the immediacy of the moment. More recently, Marlene has been working with oils, which she finds enjoyable and challenging. Marlene__™s works can be found in collections in Palm Beach, Vero Beach, Sebastian and Boca Raton FL, Bryson City and Greensboro NC, Richmond, VA, Portland Oregon, Block Island RI, Long Island and New York NY as well as Toronto and Ottawa Canada.
