Lisette Torres About
I work through inspiration. At this moment I have been inspired by Lois Dodd's night paintings and lunar cycle studies. This led me to work on my own series of night sky and lunar paintings. Muted blocks of color with a single light source peak my interest.
The process for my art work is the same for painting and photography it's a mixture of reality, fantasy and the process itself. Part reality because I research and review my subject matter for inspiration, part fantasy because once done for the night the next part comes to me in my sleep, such as composition, which colors to use and sometimes a narrative to go with that particular painting or photograph. The last part is the process itself because I let the paint or camera lens lead me to where it wants to go
But all of that is trumped by obsession. I get consumed and obsessed by a project so much so that my first documentary photo series, "Domesticism" evolved from it.
As a native New Yorker I have set up a small studio in the corner of the kitchen in my Brooklyn apartment. I work late nights passionately painting or grabbing my camera to document the world around me.
I'm currently pursuing my AFA at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, NY with plans to obtain my BFA in the future.
I'm living and painting in Brooklyn, NY working on my night series and digital photography, all while balancing family life.
