Have been invited to be Theme Speaker at a National Conference in September so suggested participants bring a Journal as we'll be doing some Creative Spirituality Journaling over the weekend. But most don't "journal" yet so don't have a Journal. What did I do but suggest they get a small group together and I'd teach them how to create a simple Journal! Huh? Problem was - I'd never made a Journal. But, thanks to Bev Allen for her encouragement from afar, now I have. I'm calling it the Pocket Journal : one signature, leather cover, embellishments if desired, really simple to make and fits in a pocket/purse. ;-) Love the philosophy of little children's book The Little Engine That Could: "I think I can, I think I can - I did!" And, I did… Continue reading… 1 comment

A New Year will be upon us soon (for those in the other hemisphere, you're already in 2010! Happy NY!) and with it comes a gentle wish for a creative, healthy, prosperous year filled with abundant blessings which delight, challenge, nurture and enrich our spirit. It's starting off great --- gave DH a tangerine and he peeled it (see photo). As I looked, I was delighted to see the emergence of a star. Creativity abounds - may we have "eyes to see", energy and motivation to "do" and the gift of simply "be-ing" in this wonder-filled universe… Continue reading… 0 comments

"Once we realize that we are truly created in the Creator's image, we will start to understand that we, too, must be creators. When we understand this fact, the doors will burst wide open ..." (Katherine Solomon). Facebook has a special Group for anyone interested in the connection between creativity and spirituality. It's called "Creative Spirituality" and the latest discussion is about the above quote. You're welcome to join us, reflect and share how you understand your role as 'creator.' P.S. Took the photo on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada… Continue reading… 3 comments

A Moment of Wonder

I watched in wonder as the snow descended on the bush outside my office window as a snowbird magically and gradually appeared o top of the bush. Rushing to get my camera, I realized that the snowbird captured the essence of this Season of Wonder, Joy, Awe and Peace so this year, instead of a calligraphed Christmas card, I decided to use the photo I took of that Moment of Wonder to send to cyberfriends here at ArtID. May you experience many "moments of wonder" in the coming days and weeks in ways that you can't even begin to ask or imagine! I wish you all a wonderful (wonder-filled) Season of Christmas and a New Year brimming with creativity, spontaneity, spiritual growth, good health and joy! ArtID subscribers are finding their way to the new Facebook group ... "CreativeSpirituality" I've recently created. The rationale for the group: I believe that we have all been gifted with creativity in some way and that all people have a spiritual component to their humanity. While I wouldn't self-define as a watercolourist, painter, sculptor, fibre artist, calligrapher, dancer, architect, photographer, singer, quilter etc., I would self-define as a CreativeSpirituality Artist - a coined phrase to describe the connection between creativity and spirituality as expressed in my artistic endeavours. Fascination with the connection between art and soul resulted in the birth of "Soulistry" (Artistry of the Soul ... www.soulistry… Continue reading… 0 comments

I believe that everyone is an artist - that they have been gifted with creativity in some way. Many have identified that gift and nurture it in unique ways here at ArtID. I delight in viewing the various galleries and reading the blogs for your artwork nourishes my spirit. While I wouldn't self-define as a watercolourist or a painter, sculptor, fibre artist, calligrapher, dancer, architect, photographer, singer, quilter etc.,I would self-define as a CreativeSpirituality Artist. It's a description I've come up with to describe what and why I do what do for I__™m fascinated by the connection between creativity and spirituality - between art and soul. The butterfly is a wonderful (wonder-filled) symbol for me ... of new birth ... beginnings ... creativity and spirituality ..… Continue reading… 1 comment

This Christmas "JOY" card for each of you was initially created as an experiment to see what I could do with the zentangle technique and a Christmas theme. I'd played with Christmas bells, trees, angels, stars and ball-shapes and then decided to see how it would work out with letters. I'm not an experienced calligrapher so thought I'd stick with as few alphabet letters as I could - and, as I'm feeling particularly "joy-filled/joyful" these days, the word selection was easy: JOY ! I drew the letters and then zentangled inside them. Using gel pens, I coloured the outer white spaces with either green/gold/red/silver and then ... voila! The reason for my joy is simple. Three-fold, actually… Continue reading… 0 comments

The Launch

With the launch of the Soulistry Workshops and Retreats comes the question from prospective clients "What do you offer in the workshops and retreats?" It's taken a bit of doing but I've now put together a one-page outline and so far, the reception has been very positive. ;-) As Soulistry 's intention is to offer workshops and retreats "connecting spirituality and creativity" thought I'd post that sheet here in the hopes that ArtID folk network can share info about new creative possibilities. ;-) Living in Shawnigan Lake, on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, the mist on the lake is often mysterious and filled with promise at the same time. That's the image of Soulistry at this moment in its history. Misty - mysterious - filled with promise… Continue reading… 0 comments

Birth Notice

After many months of planning and preparation, Soulistry: Artistry of the Soul workshops were birthed this week at a gathering of regional Administrators and Administrative Assistants. I had fun - and by the response from the evaluation sheets of participants, so did they. Participants arrived wondering what the organizers had arranged for their conference. A speaker with a 'heavy' message was in the morning and if past conferences were any indication, they expected the afternoon speaker would be the same. But, that wasn't the case. Instead, I showed up with a brief introduction to Soulistry and how I came to claim the title of Creative Spirituality Artist. And, before they knew it, they were at tables learning two very simple marbelling paper techniques… Continue reading… 0 comments

"Seeing ... Me!"

___I__™m not creative___ was my mantra. I rationalized this lack of creative ability by telling myself that I__™d never taken any Art courses in school so didn__™t have any training or skills in visual arts. Same thing for why I wasn__™t a good cook or couldn__™t sew ___ I hadn__™t taken Home Economics in school. Then, about five years ago, a lengthy illness presented me with time - time to recuperate, heal, think, to be. In the ensuing precious gift of time, I discovered a creative part of me that I didn__™t know existed. Unable to sleep one night, I wandered into my spare room where a variety of craft things were stored. Sitting in my chair, I looked at the top shelf and saw several wooden framed mirrors… Continue reading… 0 comments

For decades I have wanted to do calligraphy. Too timid to buy a real calligraphy pen holder and nib - thinking only 'real calligraphers' used them - calligraphy fountain pens and felt markers were purchased. I tried them (once), but could never get the 'thin' and 'thick' lines or write words that looked anything like what I saw in books etc. When a friend suggested I take a calligraphy class, I was ready, willing to try and learn about one of the visual arts. I was determined to have fun and not focus on the end-product in comparison with others in the class. Maybe, just maybe, I could learn to do calligraphy for my "Soulistry ArtCards". Some say that calligraphy is easy. Some say it__™s difficult. I say it__™s fun ..… Continue reading… 0 comments

The ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu was reputed to have said ___Nurturing your love is like tending a small garden. If you keep pulling up the plants to see if the roots are growing, you will not harvest anything.___ Over the years, I have come to recognize the importance of self-nurture and that regardless of what/who the ___love__™ is (Lao Tzu__™s quote), when we care for and encourage the growth and development (of another, ourselves, our art, our vocation), the result is self-nurture. How often have I said/thought ___I__™m not an artist.___ ___I can__™t draw.___ ___I can__™t ______ only to realize that the more emphasis I put on the negative, the less likely it would be that I would cultivate my artistic and creative soul… Continue reading… 1 comment

Spirituality. It__™s a word that evokes a variety of responses, not the least of which is a belief that unless one is religious and connected to a particular religion, they__™re not spiritual. And yet, for centuries, writers have expressed the opinion that religion is not a necessary component of spirituality but that being in touch with one's creative / artistic self, is… Continue reading… 1 comment
