Art is All Around!

Art is all around! Sometimes, though, we need to be in new places, experience creative possibilities/art techniques and play so that our ability to create is stimulated and renewed. If this is you (or you know someone for whom this is true), I encourage you to consider something radical ... a trip to Prague, the Czech Republic September 26 to October 2nd! There, your art and soul will connect in exciting new ways through a "Soulistry: Artistry of the Soul" workshop. For more info, check out the website: and this recent article: or my website: www.soulistry… Continue reading… 0 comments

"Once we realize that we are truly created in the Creator's image, we will start to understand that we, too, must be creators. When we understand this fact, the doors will burst wide open ..." (Katherine Solomon). Facebook has a special Group for anyone interested in the connection between creativity and spirituality. It's called "Creative Spirituality" and the latest discussion is about the above quote. You're welcome to join us, reflect and share how you understand your role as 'creator.' P.S. Took the photo on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada… Continue reading… 3 comments

ArtID subscribers are finding their way to the new Facebook group ... "CreativeSpirituality" I've recently created. The rationale for the group: I believe that we have all been gifted with creativity in some way and that all people have a spiritual component to their humanity. While I wouldn't self-define as a watercolourist, painter, sculptor, fibre artist, calligrapher, dancer, architect, photographer, singer, quilter etc., I would self-define as a CreativeSpirituality Artist - a coined phrase to describe the connection between creativity and spirituality as expressed in my artistic endeavours. Fascination with the connection between art and soul resulted in the birth of "Soulistry" (Artistry of the Soul ... www.soulistry… Continue reading… 0 comments

I believe that everyone is an artist - that they have been gifted with creativity in some way. Many have identified that gift and nurture it in unique ways here at ArtID. I delight in viewing the various galleries and reading the blogs for your artwork nourishes my spirit. While I wouldn't self-define as a watercolourist or a painter, sculptor, fibre artist, calligrapher, dancer, architect, photographer, singer, quilter etc.,I would self-define as a CreativeSpirituality Artist. It's a description I've come up with to describe what and why I do what do for I__™m fascinated by the connection between creativity and spirituality - between art and soul. The butterfly is a wonderful (wonder-filled) symbol for me ... of new birth ... beginnings ... creativity and spirituality ..… Continue reading… 1 comment

The busyness of life grabs at us ___ the anxiety produced by the seemingly never-ending economic woes with predictions of recession and depression scream at us on the evening news. No time. No energy. No creative juice. No zest for life. ___What__™s the balance?___ Maybe it__™s in giving ourselves permission to be a human ___be-ing___ rather than a human ___do-ing… Continue reading… 0 comments

"Seeing ... Me!"

___I__™m not creative___ was my mantra. I rationalized this lack of creative ability by telling myself that I__™d never taken any Art courses in school so didn__™t have any training or skills in visual arts. Same thing for why I wasn__™t a good cook or couldn__™t sew ___ I hadn__™t taken Home Economics in school. Then, about five years ago, a lengthy illness presented me with time - time to recuperate, heal, think, to be. In the ensuing precious gift of time, I discovered a creative part of me that I didn__™t know existed. Unable to sleep one night, I wandered into my spare room where a variety of craft things were stored. Sitting in my chair, I looked at the top shelf and saw several wooden framed mirrors… Continue reading… 0 comments

The Worry box

WHAT __" ME WORRY ? Worry __" worry. Some people are really worry-warts. They worry about the weather. They worry about exams. They worry about finances. They worry about grades. They worry about health. They worry whether their art is 'good enough.' They worry about ___ worrying! J. Arthur Rank, the movie mogul, was a worrier. One day, he had an idea. He decided to do all his worrying on the same day each week. When anything happened that gave him anxiety, he wrote it down and put it in his Worry Box. Each Wednesday, he opened the Worry Box and found that most of the things that had worried him the other six days, were already settled and it would have been useless to worry about them… Continue reading… 0 comments

Sunny. It__™s a name that suits my friend well. Her easy, friendly manner encourages smiling responses in those she meets. Her patient, open acceptance of others, her loving nature and grace blesses those who encounter her. She brings sunshine in her very step. Yes, Sunny is well named. Each time I encounter Sunny, I find myself learning something because Sunny is a gifted teacher who by example, teaches a simple lesson: ___Take each day as it comes, appreciate it as gift and play a little!___ Sunny embodies the saying of the Jewish Rabbi, Joshua Heschel, who wrote that ___Just to be is a blessing. Just to live is holy___ and she points to the truth of the saying that ___Yesterday was the past. Tomorrow is the future… Continue reading… 0 comments

For decades I have wanted to do calligraphy. Too timid to buy a real calligraphy pen holder and nib - thinking only 'real calligraphers' used them - calligraphy fountain pens and felt markers were purchased. I tried them (once), but could never get the 'thin' and 'thick' lines or write words that looked anything like what I saw in books etc. When a friend suggested I take a calligraphy class, I was ready, willing to try and learn about one of the visual arts. I was determined to have fun and not focus on the end-product in comparison with others in the class. Maybe, just maybe, I could learn to do calligraphy for my "Soulistry ArtCards". Some say that calligraphy is easy. Some say it__™s difficult. I say it__™s fun ..… Continue reading… 0 comments

The ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu was reputed to have said ___Nurturing your love is like tending a small garden. If you keep pulling up the plants to see if the roots are growing, you will not harvest anything.___ Over the years, I have come to recognize the importance of self-nurture and that regardless of what/who the ___love__™ is (Lao Tzu__™s quote), when we care for and encourage the growth and development (of another, ourselves, our art, our vocation), the result is self-nurture. How often have I said/thought ___I__™m not an artist.___ ___I can__™t draw.___ ___I can__™t ______ only to realize that the more emphasis I put on the negative, the less likely it would be that I would cultivate my artistic and creative soul… Continue reading… 1 comment

Spirituality. It__™s a word that evokes a variety of responses, not the least of which is a belief that unless one is religious and connected to a particular religion, they__™re not spiritual. And yet, for centuries, writers have expressed the opinion that religion is not a necessary component of spirituality but that being in touch with one's creative / artistic self, is… Continue reading… 1 comment
