Gift from Zoltan
Some years ago Zoltan Szabo came to our area of Northeast Wisconsin and gave a workshop, which I was delighted to take. At the time I was trying to break free from rigid lines and highly representational style. Watching him work was a gift. At the end of the workshop, for his final demonstration, he poured paint on the paper, allowed it to blend, and made a lovely painting out of it. He drew our names from a jar to see who would win it. I won it! As a result of his example, his "gift", I got much more--the freedom to paint as I felt, instead of as my eyes see. So this is my mostly spontaneous "tropical treasure" which I painted after that workshop. Zoltan has left us now. He's painting some other scenes in some world we can't yet see. We have lost a lot by his passing. I treasure the five books of his which he autographed at that time. He left his wonderful lessons in each of them for many artists throughout the world.
