I have just posted a new painting in my ArtId gallery called "Trio". It is an encaustic painting, inspired by a set of carved bone beads of mine. The rich surface of this piece consists of carved lines and texture made with a wire brush while the wax was still warm. I then rubbed oil pastel onto the surface and wiped some of it off. Voila! A painting was born. I hope you enjoy it.

"33,000 Words" is a piece that I completed in November, and was shown in Everett, Washington, in the exhibition "One More Time". This exhibition, sponsored by Lowell Art Works, showcased some very diverse artworks--all made from recycled materials. This collage/assemblage is a bit humorous, using an old clipboard, and antique dictionary and found objects. It is a bit of a 'play on words'
I'm very excited about my upcoming class, "Shrine of a Lifetime", that I'll be teaching this February 21 and 28 (2009). It will be held at Edmonds Community College in beautiful Washington state.
We will be creating a fabulous shrine dedicated to a beloved person, pet, place, or idea. Learn about Mexican shrines_such as ofrendas and home altars_and their history and place in contemporary society. Discover how to manipulate various mixed media using acrylics, fabric, paper, and found objects, while also learning the art of simple attachments. Express yourself with cherished photos, handwritten notes and your own sacred objects. Your completed shrine will truly be "art from the heart."

I have just completed this beautiful, vibrant mixed media and encaustic collage, using found objects and photos printed on canvas. It is my tribute to the spirit of the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. I took the photos that I used in the piece in Oaxaca, Mexico during Dia de los Muertos.
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, has got to be one of the most beautiful holidays I have ever witnessed. Mexican families honor their loved ones who have passed on by cleaning and decorating each gravesite with flowers, candles, favorite foods, etc. Each day (and night) the families gather at the gravesites to celebrate the lives of their deceased loved ones. It is so beautiful to witness, I found myself shedding tears often during this experience…
