John Atkinson was born in San Diego, California, in 1947. He grew up in Southern California and has also lived in other parts of the West including Hawaii and in the Pacific Northwest in Astoria, Oregon.

The study of drawing and art has been a part of John__??s life from the beginning. Upon returning from service in the US Army in Vietnam in 1968-1969, he returned to college, and while channeling his artistic abilities into the study of architecture and commercial art, he continued serious study of life drawing and art history. John explored a variety of mediums and found that oil painting is best suited to his nature, although he enjoys other mediums.

In the winter of 1977, John moved to the Flathead Valley in NW Montana. Nature is a wonderful part of life in this region and most of his landscape concepts are the result of time spent outdoors . Still life and portrait subjects give a change of pace, a chance to experiment, and encourage deeper study in the studio. John also likes to travel and these experiences will show up in his work. He is often compelled to include evidence of the human presence in an environment that is rapidly changing.

John uses traditional methods to attempt to paint on canvas the experience of the subject with direct painting and use of color and value relationships, while suggesting essential detail. His paintings have been included in exhibitions in Montana and in other western states.

Works are in private collections in the United States and a few are in Canada.

John lives, with his wife Ann, in Whitefish, Montana, where studio visitors are welcome by appointment.
