Art Collectors Herb & Dorothy Vogel
Last night I had the pleasure of watching the movie about the art collectors Herb & Dorothy Vogel and I would highly recommend it to all Artists & Collectors. These amazing people Herb Vogel a retired Post office worker and Dorothy Vogel a retired Librarian amassed a collection of over 4700 pc of art from some of the most famous artists from the 60's to present. They did this with modest means and lived off of Dorothy's salary while using Herb's salary to buy art. Because of their constant support of artists in purchasing works they not only built a priceless collection that they would end up donating to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC but helped numerous amount of artists financially. In today's world of multi million dollar auction sales that benefit only the super rich and do nothing for the working class artists it was refreshing to see these dedicated Art Collectors and all they did for many generations of artists. I always thought that a few thousand dollars aimed in the right direction could contribute greatly to emerging and struggling artists. Watching this movie confirmed my feelings. I still remember in 2007 when the World Bank bought out all my paintings (7) from the ICA Fair at the Puck Building, although the sale amounted to just over $8,000 it caused a great stir at the fair and made a big difference in my future as an artist. When I hear of the multi million dollars paid for paintings at some of the leading fairs and auction houses I always think what an impact that money would make if used to buy art from emerging & struggling artists. I think that the super rich people that buy the multi million dollar paintings do it for show & prestige and could care less for the average working artists and their struggles. Collectors like Herb & Dorothy Vogel are the real backbone of the Art World and to all art collectors like them I am most thankful. I have been very fortunate to have had the patronage of many collectors like the Vogel's during my art career and it has made all the difference in the world for me. I would like to thank the collectors Donald & Shelley Rubin, Judith Singer, Alan & Lynn Fliegel, Ruben Fernandez, Julie & Frank Carbonell and so many others that have and continue to purchase my art. It is because of your support that I am able to create the art I do and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. To all reading this blog if you get a chance please watch this movie (I borrowed mine from the Public Library)and to the art collectors thank you for all your support to all us artists it is much appreciated. To my fellow artists keep on creating and I hope you will find many patrons and success very soon.
