Five Years After

Five years after I painted "Dried Pomegranate and Dates", I decided to paint it again, in order to examine and evaluate the influence of five years experience in painting.

In my opinion from from a professional perspective, the new painting is much more advanced, in the main because of the freedom expressed. However, to my astonishment, many of my friends that I asked which of the two they liked, answered that they preferred the first painting because of the contrast differences, in other words, because in the first work the fruits appear darker.

It's a little hard to see, but I blew up the images as far as I could and I must agree, I like the first one as well. The first is more vibrant, contrast is better and it's more interesting to view. The second may be more technically advanced but the tone has been subdued, for me it is less interesting. If I hadn't seen them side by side I probably would have liked them both independently since each has it's own strengths.
