C. Roger Mader About
After a BFA from Pratt Institute, a career in advertising led me from New York to Germany, France, Mexico, Belgium and Canada. During those years I painted a number of large hyper realist oils, but my time was scarce.
Now free, I settled in France with my french wife. I went to a school in Paris to learn etching, which I had been interested in for many years. I then benefited of the private tutoring of Christiane Veille, a prominent French abstract expressionist and specialist in the technique of aquatint. Having studied line etching, dry point, sugar lift, soft varnish, engraving, etc. I decided to purchase a press and built an etching studio on the upper floor of a barn on our property in Normandy. And so my journey into the world of gravure began.
I found that I could "paint" using a copper plate,a steel burnisher and inks.
I am a realist "painter-etcher"; I find subjects that speak to me and try to represent them in a way that they will speak to those who view my work.
I have been sharing my etchings with friends for many years and I am always interested and often surprised by the dialogue that starts between a certain person and a certain picture.
Now I would like to extend my reach to others.
