About I re-discovered the ancient world of encaustic painting in 2013, fell in love with it's beauty and so many challenges that I cannot leave it alone! Have also worked in pastels, colored pencil, pen & ink, scratchboard, acrylics, clay and photography. Biography Originally a New York City gal, I've been happily transplanted to San Diego for many years. I attended the School of Art & Design (formerly SIA ) in Manhattan, in a former Civil War Hospital - now replaced with high rise buildings. Career-wise, was a graphic artist/designer for a governmental non-profit agency for 20 years. Now, redirected, I am free to experiment with many mediums, pastels and my favorites - encaustic waxes… Continue reading… 0 comments

Crossing the Mara

by Foothills , October 9, 2013—12:00 AM

Topics: Wildlife, show

Wildlife isn't always pretty! Sometimes it is a question of "the tooth and claw" of nature. I have watched the drama on the Mara River as the wildebeest are forced by instinct to cross the Mara where the grass is literally greener at the other side..… Continue reading… 0 comments

This is a collage created almost entirely from recycled magazines. (The sun is gold leaf) I worked on this by grading the magazine photos by value and then treating the value sketch (gridded up onto 24_36 piece of black matboard from an 8,5_11 b/w photograph) like the base for a big big jigsaw… Continue reading… 5 comments

This painting won the Mayor's Choice Award in the recent "Masters of Moment " show in El Cajon California. There are only about 400 of the pure bred wildcats left and they have been declared an endangered species. They have been hunted to near extinction as their territories have shrunk. In addition interbreeding with feral cats has reduced the strain… Continue reading… 3 comments

Recycled Rhino

by Foothills , May 19, 2010—12:00 AM

Topics: Wildlife collage recycle

This piece was created for a Wildlife in Art Show in California. I wanted to combine a threatened species with a "green " theme. There was a heap of discarded NGM s in our clubhouse library so I decided to "recycle" them! It took about three weeks and 37 magazines to assemble and made the most amazing mess in my apartment! I worked on a three value drawing on black Canson paper... and I have never gotten around to counting the number of animals in the picture... but the nostril of the beast is the birth canal of a male seahorse! Collage created from recycled National Geographic magazines… Continue reading… 3 comments
