Paniolo

This picture is of a friend; a Paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy. It was taken at Sedona recently when he came to visit. His horse was provided by the "Cowboy Club" of Sedona, and he mounted it with pride, just because everyone said he couldn't! The history of Paniolos goes way back to 1832 when King Kamehameha III contacted Mexican vaqueros who were expert horsemen with plenty of cattle experience. They arrived with boots and saddles, and a new language and also a flamboyant new lifestyle for the Big Island of Hawaii. Waimea(Kamuela) is one of the largest ranching areas there.
