Genevieve, A Creole Slave

In the early 1860's, I would have imagined that there was a young woman who worked in the house much like the one in Oak Alley, La. Being a young lady for service taking care of the food and house preparations was her daily duties. In the later evenings however, when the master was home from business, there was pleasure to be had at her expense. There was little talk about this situation because it was a well kept secret that no one should dare talk. But poor Miss Genevieve in all her doings wasn't able to keep this saddness from her face. Pleasing she was for the master of the house, he wanted a painting of her to remember just like she was in her youth. Modest as she was in public, she did what was asked even though it was not how she wanted to be remembered.
