Richard Crookes About
Calligrapher and artist working over 25 years freelance in the publishing industries as well as exhibiting in his own right. Richard completed the three year advanced training scheme of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators Add Comment
I have been working as a full time freelance artist since 1981, providing illustrations for the publishing and advertising industries, as well as exhibiting and carrying out private commissions. I began my calligraphy studies in 1996 at Craven College in Skipton, with Jilly Hazeldine and went on to study on the 3 year advanced training scheme of The Society of Scribes and Illuminators, from which I graduated in 2002.
I have since been taking an experimental approach to hand lettering, combining this with digital imaging, paper sculpture and finding new areas of work in book jacket design.
After studying the rigours of traditional lettering, I have felt a need in my more personal work to explore areas of freedom, fluidity and improvisation whilst retaining the importance of attention to detail and the beauty of natural curves.
I do not see a dichotomy between my commercial and my more personal work, for me it is always a case of finding the best solution to a creative problem.
Completely hand made pieces are rarely larger than A1, but calligraphy with digital treatment can be output at any size.
