Corporate Art Advice Art Blog
One of the things that you as an artist need to think about when doing business with art consultants, galleries or designers is creating business forms to use for the many transactions that occur during the process of selling your artwork. Most, if not all, consultants and designers have forms that they use, but it__™s always such a pleasure to deal with an artist who has their own and who is prepared. It__™s impressive and tells the art buyer this is an artist who is organized and will more than likely be a pleasure with whom to do business. The reality is, it WILL make you more organized and you WILL be more successful in your business because you will always know exactly what the status is for every piece of artwork that is not in your studio.
To start, the first two forms that you should create are: 1. A consignment sheet 2. An invoice
These forms will not be overly difficult to create particularly because you can look at a selection on Google Docs Templates. Thank you Google!
There are several good ones from which to select. In my serach on google, I didn__™t see any standard consignment sheets so try to find an invoice that could be utilized as both. This way, if something on the consignment sheet is sold, you can simply remove the items that didn__™t sell and voila! You have your invoice with all the necessary information already filled in. There will be no need to do the work twice. And wouldn__™t you love to be just as efficient with the mundane business of business as you are as a creative? Just remember that when you are switching from a consignment sheet to an invoice that you make that change in the form. It might simply be that you change from ___Consignment 08.2008.01___ to ___Invoice 08.2008.01.___ Whatever, be sure it__™s something that will make sense to you. After all, you are trying to create a system that will be easy for you to keep track of without taking too much time away for what you love to do __" create!
Once you__™ve produced a consignment sheet and an invoice, then you__™ll be ready to move on to other forms. But not right now. Getting yourself organized for doing better business should not be overwhelming. Keeping track of where your artwork and getting paid for what sells is most important. We__™ll move on to other forms in another blog.
