Charity Rae About

This body of work is a collection of stories. Some of the pieces are tales created in my imagination sparked by the image of three boys on an old postcard that I bought at a seaside junk store in Oregon. Others are expressions of my own personal memories and experiences. It is through the sharing of stories and memories that we find a connection with others and a deeper understanding of ourselves and of our place in life and society. Add Comment

*Artist Statement

My work speaks to the depth of human experience. It reminds us that we are all a collection of stories and a layering of memories. My work refers to the limitations of the physical self -- how we are confined to our bodies and tied to the earth. It speaks of relics and remnants, to the seemingly insignificant objects that we collect and cherish, and to how these reveal our identity and become traces of our existence.

*Biography

Charity Rae grew up in rural Pennsylvania where the starry sky was immense, the forest deep and alluring, and the nearest neighbor a speck over the hills. These roots instilled in her a value of quiet introspection and simplicity. Her vivid imagination and innate curiosity found a channel in the arts. She attended Edinboro University in Pennsylvania where she majored in photography. Charity now resides in Ithaca, New York where she has exhibited in The 19th Annual Juried Photography Show at State of the Art Gallery and had an exhibition at The Clinton House Artspace. Her work was also displayed in the Collage and Assemblage exhibit at The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, NY as well as at The Rhino Gallery in New Orleans during the Prospect 1 Biennale in 2008 and the Art in a Box group exhibit in 2009. Charity was a selected artist in MARK, New York Foundation for the Arts__™ professional practice program and a recipient of NYFA__™S Strategic Opportunity Stipend Grant. Other awards include third place in a photography contest by Ilford Photo and an art grant from The Community Arts Partnership in Ithaca. Charity is currently immersed in a new series of photographs about memory and myth.
