Body of a Woman was inspired by two things. My gorgeous model, Amber and a poem by Pablo Neruda entitled Body of a Woman from his book, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. The canvas has the poem written on the back both in Spanish and English. "Body of a woman, white hills, white thighs. You look like a world, lying in surrender." My hope is that I have done his beautiful poem justice… Continue reading… 0 comments

On the day before Valentine's Day, Birmingham, Alabama hosted their second Erotic Art Exhibition. This year with tango dancers, a saxophone player and a fortune teller to complement the amazing belly dancers (who were even better than last year). There was plenty of first class erotic artwork including paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture and video. Masks were handed out to all the attendees at the door. Although many people wore their own masks to give an air of Mardi Gras combined with Venice to lend a Valentine's air to the event. Leo Ticheli is the organiser of Arts de Valentine which this year was held to support the Birmingham Women's Rape Crisis Center. http://www.crisiscenterbham.comContinue reading… 1 comment

To see the exhibition of abstract american painters circa 1940 - 1960. This exhibition is vast and with far too many paintings to absorb in one visit. (A topic for a future blog, do museums curate such large exhibits in order to bring people back and make more money?). As a very figurative painter myself, I've always had issues with understanding abstract art and mostly have to follow my gut. For instance, I completely feel the genius of a Jackson Pollock but in an entirely subjective way. The passion shows through in his paintings but the paintings themselves don't make sense to me. I am a lot more comfortable with De Kooning's more figurative works as well as his colour palette. Painters like Barnett Newman leave me confused and uncomfortable… Continue reading… 11 comments

Gitana Rosa Gallery Presents: HUNG Checking Out the Contemporary Male Opening Reception: Friday, September 17, 7-10PM September 17 __" October 16, 2010 To kick off the fall season, Williamsburg__™s Gitana Rosa Gallery, refracts the male gaze. Hung, a multimedia exhibition, hones in on the male nude. A heroic figure in Greek, Roman and Renaissance art, the male nude proves more fascinating than ever. Whether it is relegated to obscurity or exalted past recognition, men__™s bodies continue to challenge both men__™s and women__™s perceptions. Love them or hate them, Hung__™s male nudes tease the line between the sensuous and the glaringly obvious to present a nuanced portrait of the contemporary male… Continue reading… 0 comments

This is a group show celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Calamus edition of Leaves of Grass. "I now suspect there is something fierce in you, eligible to burst forth: For an athlete is enamoured of me- and I of him. But toward him there is something fierce and terrible in me, eligible to burst forth," poem 36 http://artid.com/members/carolynweltman/art/35206-still-in-the-game/ If you would like to attend this show and need more information, please do contact me 0 comments

Still In The Game is possibly one of the strongest drawings I've ever done. So much power in this boxer down but not out and pulling himself up on the ropes. Still In The Game is to be published in 100 Artists of the Male Nude later this year and will also be exhibited at Calamus 150, a show based on the Walt Whitman homoerotic poems. The show will be held at the Hudson Guild, NYC… Continue reading… 0 comments

On Valentine's Day this year, Birmingham, Alabama hosted their very first Erotic Art Exhibition complete with belly dancers, (they were fabulous) masks, flashlights and most importantly, some really wonderful artwork. Leo Ticheli the organiser of this innovative event, unsure if he'd be run out of town or not, courageously rounded up his artists from both the immediate area and some of us from further afield to put together this event. Having been invited to attend and given a special mask to wear, I just as courageously headed south with a few of my paintings and drawings to lend a New York touch to the affair. The event brought in probably about four or five hundred people, we even witnessed a line at the door to get in… Continue reading… 3 comments
