Really beautiful. I have been doing italic calligraphy for many years, & I'd love to learn Copperplate. I have the best nibs; however, when I've tried it, It has always been scratchy. I quit because that was unpleasant. The lovely thing about Italic c is how the nib sails on the paper. It's so smooth. Is this never true of Copperplate? Is it always scratchy?

Thank you for watching the video and asking excellent questions. Yes, my hand is resting on the paper as I write but my whole arm moves with the strokes. The upstrokes are achieved with VERY light pressure or no pressure at all, simply resting the nib on the paper and sliding it up. It sounds impossible but it can be done. The nib is sharp but not as sharp as you might think. It takes practice.

May I please ask how you are able to do upstrokes (as opposed to downstrokes) without the extremely sharp point of the nib digging into the soft paper? Also, is any part of your hand touching the page at all as you do this? Please find me most grateful for your kind response. And yes, this is extremely edifying to watch--thank you so much for taking your time to post the video.

I want to be you when I grow up. Your sooo talented. When are you going to come over and play? I miss your upbeat personality. I could use some of that right now!

I'm glad you got something out of my video. I really did it off the cuff, quickly for a student. My next installment will be a better production.

Thanks for posting this Mary. I've been trying to spend a bit of time to work on copperplate script myself which is something I've never quite gotten the feel for. This seems very clear and straightforward.
