Calligraphy: A Scribe's Notes Art Blog
I am serving as the Exhibit Chair for this years event which will include a Faculty Show, Participants Exhibit, a collective: Words for Peace and a 74 piece special exhibit based on the lyrics of singer, songwriter Cheryl Wheeler. Entitled "Nice Rendition":http://www.nicerendition.com/ this last exhibit is a huge undertaking for the coordinators of 70 calligraphers, not only mount an extraordinary exhibit but, also to produce a beautiful full color book that includes the entire lyric accompanying each work of art.
Conferences are a unique combination of gathering, learning, sharing, communicating, keeping up with old friends and meeting new. I talk to calligraphers all over the word on a daily basis. I__™ve met most of them at one Conference or another over the years. Conferences have given me the opportunity to study with top notch instructors, attend lectures given by the rock stars of calligraphy and see the work of the masters, some now gone. I also met emerging talent, with innovative thinking that has affected the calligraphy world of today.
There is talk that this year__™s conference will be the last of it__™s kind. It is not hard to understand why. Lettering Arts Guilds are shrinking, people__™s priorities have changed, and interest is waning. In the last thirty years our time has been gobbled up by learning, and living with, mushrooming technology. Younger generations attentions are focused elsewhere and our culture in general has lowered it__™s involvement in, and support of, the arts.
Maybe Calligraphy conferences have run their course. If that is so then I am grateful that I was able to attend them while they lasted. My artistic life was heavily influenced by these major gatherings, these passionate people and the extraordinary level of education in multiple disciplines that has come into play in many other aspects of my creative interests.
I for one will savor every minute of my time at Odyssey, hug my friends repeatedly, share a few bottles of wine, and absorb the magical pulsing energy that is calligraphy.
