Jessica Art Blog
Oooh my. It has been a while since I posted here!
The truth is, I got lured away into a Book Arts class over the summer.
It was pretty intense--four hours a night, three nights a week. They crammed it in, too, as a six week course (There, I've just confessed the book arts doesn't cover the whole of my absence. VBS counts for a chunk, and the rest... Just Stuff).
Anyway, Book Arts was great fun. I finally got to make paper, which was delightful and led, in a crooked line, to the first VBS; the church needed someone to teach paper making and my three hours making paper put me three hours ahead of anyone else available. Everyone, including me, enjoyed it, but I have to admit: The entire setup was quite different from the one I'd learned on, and factoring in the fact that kids tend to DUMP rather than "pour the pulp evenly" over the deckle meant that we ended up with something a bit more like cardboard. Still, like I said, everyone had fun, and everyone had some paper to take home at the end of the week.
I also got to try paste paper (which I learned about on this very site, from Mary Lawler's blog over at http://artid.com/members/calligraphy/blog/post/970-paste-paper) for the first time. It is fun, and flipping through books and this site, I see there is a whole lot yet to learn.
I discovered collage, too, in the last couple of weeks. And boy do I ever have a lot to learn there!
And I made some more rose beads that didn't mold, this time. They also didn't end up smooth so that I could polish them the way the various directions say they should--I'd love to actually have someone teach me instead of picking it up second-hand from the web--but I like the way they look, and I made a necklace with three different shades that I think turned out quite well.
Oh, and I did take pictures. Made a couple of books with them, in fact, one that I am sending out to the wide world of publishing to see if I can persuade an editor to think it's as good as I think it is. I had a slightly harder time finding someone to send it to, as it is both words and pictures. We shall see!
Collage, incidentally, means a whole lot more pictures will be needed in the future.
Anyway, just thought I would finally stop by here to say hi and try to catch up on everyone's blogs; I have looked at them during the "time away," but not often enough, judging by the pages I just scanned!
Oh, and I thought I really ought to warn everyone here, in case they didn't already know: This art stuff, it's dangerous, highly addictive, and totally consuming.
I've done a slightly better job maintaining my "everything but the kitchen sink" blog over at boookwyrmeslair.blogspot.com, if folks are interested.
Now, to do some more reading and picture viewing here!
