How does Minds Island work for its artist members? A Minds Island Success Story
One way is our ___'_______________hands on___'______________™ approach to connecting our artist members with the art industry. Here is the story of how Minds Island came to work with VisionArt and the success some of our artist members have had as a result of our ability to work this unique business.
Meet Ren Wicks of Solar Shading Systems, where a new idea of how to use art in the home was born. The idea was one of those uniquely American entrepreneurial brainstorms. Solar Shading Systems was installing motorized window coverings in a home in Newport Beach, and simultaneously a 42" plasma TV was being installed over the fireplace. The owner remarked that she simply couldn't live with that "ugly black box" over the mantel, and asked if Solar Shading guys could do something to disguise it. From this chance request was born the idea for VisionArt.
The idea was simple but elegant. Offer customers a framed giclee reproduction of artwork to cover his plasma monitor which, at the touch of a button on a hand-held remote, would roll up inside the frame uncovering the screen, and would roll back down when the plasma wasn't being used.. The technology was at their fingertips; however, they needed to find the art.
Ren, searching for a place to start, went to Art Expo in New York last Spring. He quickly decided that working through publishers was going to be too cumbersome and expensive, that he needs a way to contact artists directly with his proposals. In the course of his wanderings through the vast art marketplace, he collected the cards of a number of artists, including those of Minds Island members with work on display.
With the artists' business cards in hand, Ren returned to California and went online. "After running up countless blind alleys, I found Minds Island. I looked at every artist on the site and was very impressed with the level of quality of the art and photography." He called Betsy at Minds island and explained his need for artworks to meet all tastes: landscapes, still lives, animals, flowers, whatever a client might be looking for. Betsy was able to point him in the direction of Minds Island members who fit each of his criteria, and to help him in his negotiations with the artists he chose to approach. "She even made some calls to Belgium for me. That's going the extra mile! I could never have done it without your help and guidance."
The result has been a sales catalogue with a preliminary selection of thirty-two images...thirteen of which are the work of Minds Island members! For each sale of a VisionArt unit with one of their images, the artist will receive a royalty. And this is only the beginning!
In addition to the VisionArt gallery of thirty-two works, Ren is in the process of upgrading a much larger, high-end collection: the Premier Gallery. This will consist of limited edition giclees, each of which will be individually signed by the artist. For this project Ren wants to find an additional 200 works by the end of the year, and Minds Island will be one of his major sources. You can expect to see his requirements posted in the Minds Island Trade Job board soon!
